Random Facts

My blog friends Whitney and Nathalie recently tagged me for fun little blog awards, so I decided to just combine the two and post the random facts about myself at once :) I've been needing to get back into my blogging groove anyway (I might have mentioned that once or twice). In Whitney's award, you were supposed to give 11 random facts about yourself, and in Nathalie's you were supposed to do 7, so I'll go with the bigger number if I can come up with that many :)

1. I'm left-handed. I think it's fun to be left-handed, and I was the only one in my family who was. So far, none of our kids are left-handed. I don't hold my paper weird when I write or anything like that.

2. David is 7 years older than me. I was fairly young when we started dating, and I think some people thought it was kind of weird that I was dating such an older guy (or that he was dating a girl so much younger). Haha! It was never weird to me, though, and now that we have kids and I'm older, no one even seems to notice the age difference. Probably most people don't even realize that there's a big age difference. People always think David looks much younger than he is, which cracks us up.

3. I am a pretty opinionated person, and I'm not sure if that comes across on the blog. I always wonder how people who don't know me in real life but read my blog perceive me. One of my dear friend's husband (who will remain unnamed -- haha) told her that he had no idea I had such a "strong personality" after we got together recently. Hahahaha. I had a good laugh about that :) I don't know if I would describe myself as having a "strong personality" or not, but I'm definitely opinionated and passionate about a lot of issues. I don't talk about a lot of them on the blog, because it's hard to express strong opinions without offending someone when you're not face-to-face. I never want to loose my witness over something that doesn't have eternal significance on this blog (or anywhere), so I just stay away from controversial topics for the most part. But I'm not afraid to have "debates" and state my opinions strongly (but hopefully kindly) in person. Just ask my friends.... hahaha!

4. I hate yelling. I just cannot stand to be yelled at or spoken to in a snappy tone of voice. I'm probably over-sensitive about tone. Because I hate it so much, I REALLY try to make an effort to never yell at my children. (I'm not saying I do this perfectly!) Even when I'm disciplining them or speaking to them firmly, it is my goal to always speak calmly and kindly to them.

5. I LOVE puppies, but I'm not really that into dogs. I hate that, but I've just kind of accepted it. I'm fond of our dogs (especially Knightly, who we've had for 5 years since he was a little puppy), but I wouldn't say I'm overly attached to them. I just don't think I have it in me to become super obsessed with a dog. This probably goes back to my childhood -- my dad hunts with dogs, and he was always getting new ones and changing breeds, etc. So, I never really had a constant dog who I totally bonded with. We enjoyed our dogs and my dad took great care of them, but they just weren't like part of the family or anything. I think it's sweet when people are super in love with their dogs, I just can't relate :)

6. I avoid awkward situations like the plague. I think I'm especially sensitive to awkwardness for some reason. It's funny, because I don't think I'm an awkward person, but I think situations are awkward sometimes when no one else really does. David is the TOTAL opposite of this. He rarely thinks any situation is awkward, which is just so funny to me. I think I knew he was "the one" when we could sit in silence without me feeling awkward. That's huge. Hahaha.

7. I've never colored my hair. I've strongly considered it, but I've just never done it. I really want to do highlights, but I'm just worried about the maintenance.

8. I love having my fingernails painted. I feel so much more put together when my nails are painted.

9. I'm definitely a girlie girl all the way. I never went through any kind of tom boy stage at all, and I've always loved dolls, babies, and all things girlie.

10. I don't keep any kind of planner. If you're super organized and structured, this probably blows your mind, but it's true :) I think a planner would totally stress me out. It would make me feel so boxed in and chained down. Haha! Maybe my life has just never been busy enough to require one? ;) On the flip side, when I make "to-do" lists for myself, it really helps me be more productive. I think it goes back to me feeling so chained down... when I put something in writing, I feel like I absolutely NEED to to get it done. In the case of chores, that's not a bad thing. I need to make to-do lists for myself more often!

11. You might remember that we gave up cable a while back. I think it's been a little over 6 months since we did that and the verdict is....... it was a GREAT decision! David and I both agree that it was the right thing to do. I watch WAY less TV. The kids only watch movies (and not more than one a day and not every day). Our house is just a lot more quiet, and I feel like we entertain ourselves in other ways now. I think it will be great for our kids to grow up in a cable-free home :) If you're toying with the idea of giving up cable, I would encourage you to try it out!

Now, I have some questions from Whitney to answer:
1. What does your husband do? He works in commercial real estate -- property management and leasing.
2. What is your guiltiest pleasure when eating/snacking? Anything with sugar! I have a serious weakness for sweets, which is hard because I really try to greatly limit the amount of sugar we all consume. My biggest weakness is probably cokes. I love them. They're so bad for me :-/
3. If you could have any job, what would it be? The one I have! Honestly, there is NOTHING I would rather do than be a stay-at-home-mom. If that just absolutely was not an option, I might enjoy being a preschool teacher? Maybe.
4. What traits annoy you in others? Oh gosh.... I feel like I can be too easily annoyed sometimes. It really annoys me when people are know-it-alls and assume things about you without taking the time to get to know you or ask questions.
5. What time of day is hardest for you? Early mornings. I'm not a morning person. At all. No matter how much sleep I've gotten, I'm never ready to get up in the morning.
6. Where do you vacation? I love going to the beach. We don't really have one place where we vacation regularly, but I think the beach will always be somewhere we'll go over and over. I just love to travel, period, and I hope we can do more and more of it as our kids get older.
7. What room in your house is your favorite? Hmmm... we spend the most time in the living room. My house is always changing, so my favorite room changes often :)
8. What magazines do you subscribe to or read? None! Isn't that crazy!? I love Southern Living, but I don't subscribe. When I have time to read, I always end up reading a book or blogs.
9. What is your favorite night out? For a date night, I love to go to a nice restaurant and then either see a movie or go to a Book Store/coffee shop and just talk :) For a girls' night, I like to go out to eat and then talk. Actually, some of my favorite girls' nights are my book club nights. We have such great conversations.
10. What do you collect? I don't collect anything. I would love to start a McCarty or Peter's Pottery collection, though :)
11. What is the last movie you saw? The Dark Knight Rises

That was fun! Thanks for tagging me, girls! I think I'm kind of late to the party on this, so I'm pretty sure everyone has already done it. So, I'm not tagging anyone :)

Great post!! I feel like I learned a TON about you!

1 - I'm left handed too. :)

2 - I had NO CLUE David was 7 years older than you. He does look younger than he is!

3 - I'm surprised to hear you are so opinionated. It's not that you come across as a pushover or anything, you just don't come across as someone with a "strong personality", LOL.

4 - I totally come from a family of yellers - we yell about everything, good and bad. We are just loud people. I'm WAY better about it since having Isaac though. Sometimes I'm shocked at how much gentler I am in that department since he came along.

5 - You've never kept a planner?!? Oh my goodness, I couldn't survive without mine!

6 - Chad and I gave up TV altogether about 4 or 5 years ago and it was an awesome decision. We didn't realize how much time we were wasting until we didn't have it around!

1. Yes, I can vouch that you're a very opinionated person. And I actually would categorize you as a strong personality. :)

2. I'm afraid to get too many pets (or a dog, period), because I'm afraid I will grow to love it dearly and then it will die. Horrible, I know, but I have such a fear of loss in that circumstance...??

3. The planner thing still blows my mind. I wouldn't function.....

4. I maintain that I still love cable. :) Ha!

I never would have imagined you with a strong personality. You seem so sweet always trying to be Switzerland when writing about something hard. I like how you express your opinion but respect others. David is older than you! He does look young to me too! Carl is 6 years older than me. We met when I was 22 and my friends thought he was so old! I love how you never yell! That is impressive! I am working on this. Unglued has helped me soooooooo much. Thanks for posting all of these tidbits!

Yeah for lefties! I'm left handed too and the only one in my family, although my maternal grandmother was left handed and my uncle (on my dad's side) is left-handed. I don't turn my hand to write but I do turn my paper to at least a 45 degree angle. I also found that since I grew up in a right handed house I do a lot of stuff right handed - ironing is the big one!
