nursery work

We're working hard to get Aubrey's room all ready before she needs it. Carrie has already posted some about it and even some pictures, but here's some more detail. It started off really well. Three weekends ago we did the painting. Amanda helped and it went very easily. We've painted many times before, and we were only painting the top 2/3 of the room. I also took off the baseboards in the room, and they came off without any trouble. I had been worried about that. I was also worried about the wainscoting which we've never done before. Two weekends ago I did most of the prep work - drawing the level line around the room, finding the studs, painting the trim and seams, etc. It seemed like it was going pretty slow at that point.

But last weekend I started hanging the wainscoting, and it went pretty quickly. The end was in sight. I had to make lots of cuts - for corners and outlets and around the window, etc. Everything was going well until I just had 3 pieces left. I was cutting the main corner that faces the door to the room - the first thing you'd see. And I cut it too short. Not to worry, I could use that under the window. So I cut the extra piece...and I cut it too short too. So now I have to go buy another sheet of wainscoting and try again.

Last night I did the cut to go under the window. I had to make a curve and a point to go under the window sill. I was worried about the measurements after my last experience. But I made a long free-hand cut and it was perfect. All the right angles. It fit great. Unfortunately, I had cut it backwards so it fit great with the brown on the outside instead of the white! So I have to do it all over again. I was so frustrated I couldn't believe it.

But still I have hopes of finishing this weekend. I need to recut my 2 screw-ups and hang the last 3 pieces of wainscoting. Then I have to caulk all the seams. Carrie is painting the baseboards and chair rail, and then I'll attach them and caulk them. I think that's doable by Saturday. We'll see.

I'm so proud of all you've accomplished! I'm sorry that you cut that piece wrong but I know you'll get it right next time! I think this weekend is doable too, but don't work yourself to death!

I like hearing that someone so intelligent screws up sometimes! This was a fun read. HA! :) I can't wait to see it when it's all done. I know it will be beautiful...

Oh I screw up lots and lots. The room is coming along. It looks good - more because of the good designer than the poor carpenter.
